Label Text: The 19th century Dutch genre painter, Willy Martens, established a reputation for his fresh handling of subjects in sunlit outdoor settings. In this charming scene, the mother and daughter are both engaged in scattering grain to the family's chickens. The young daughter, following the model of her mother, is thus trained in industry and the housewifely virtues she will be expected to possess as an adult.
