Label Text: A native of Germany who came to the United States in 1912, Fiene was known as an author and teacher as well as an artist. An instructor as the Art Student League in New York from 1938 until his death, he found subject matter for his art in the New England landscape and in motifs drawn from the Hudson River area and New York City. His work is characterized by a strong sense of composition and truth to the subject. This view of a farmer beginning work on a cold winter day shows Fiene’s interest in solid structure and compact pattern.
