Label Text: Toshikata Mizuno was born shortly after Commodore Perry's ships forced Japan to re-open to Western influence and trade. He was trained in printmaking just as the market for prints and the "floating world" culture declined. Japan was being modernized. To make a living, Mizuno did a variety of print-work. He specialized somewhat in bijin-ga, though the popularity of traditional prints of Japanese beauties had passed.
