Label Text: Adja Yunkers experimented with many styles throughout his career, including an Abstract Expressionist phase, about which he determined “all this lushness made me really seasick. Suddenly I had this longing for herring, black bread, you know, for rigid discipline. And I just gave it up.” Blue, White,Yellow represents Yunkers’ efforts toward a more disciplined simplification. He first turned his attention from painting to printmaking when he found an intriguing piece of driftwood, covered it in paint, and pressed it on paper. His prints sometimes began as woodcuts or collages, subsequently transferred to the screenprint process, which is particularly adept at producing areas of flat, uniform color.
