Label Text: The American West recorded by Richard Buswell shows places humans invaded, abandoned, and are now being reclaimed by nature. He began visiting ghost towns and homesteads as a child, with his parents. Documenting the sites for almost 50 years, the self-taught photographer has observed their natural decay and destruction by collectors and vandals. “Man is an intruder in these sites. I’m privileged to see them before nature reclaims them.” Buswell’s photographs deliver lessons of impermanence. What became of these people? How are we impacting the places we currently inhabit? How long will our contemporary marks on the land endure?
