Label Text: In Back Apartment, a weathered, white farmhouse faces autumn’s stark, bright light, unfiltered by leafless trees. A clutter of objects haphazardly spills out of the house and onto the back porch. Dark shadows further obscure these disorganized remnants of times past. In the foreground, two withered tomato plants clutch the last fruits, their season also past. Wyeth’s paintings often show a close connection to his neighbors and familiar landscapes. His paintings of friends’ homes are sometimes understood as portraits, revealing aspects of the occupant’s character. Christian Sanderson, local history teacher and collector of historical artifacts, occupied three rooms in the back of this house, near Wyeth’s home in Chadds Ford, Pennsylvania. The bachelor’s rooms were choked with the accumulation of a lifetime of collecting. Today, the entire house is a museum, displaying Sanderson’s artifacts of local and national history.
