Label Text: A young elegant woman glances askance at the viewer while her long fingers play gracefully with her string of pearls. She is richly dressed, from her jaunty black hat to her white lace blouse. But she has an enigmatic expression on her face, one that follows a person around the room. Coy and mysterious, she captivates and entrances the viewer. This beautifully rendered painting was created by Nina Belle Ward, a native of Kalamazoo who studied at the Pennsylvania Academy of Art and was one of the first art instructors at the newly formed Kalamazoo Institute of Arts. She was also an art teacher for the Kalamazoo Public Schools.
