Label Text: Conrad Marca-Relli’s prior experience with collage can be discerned in this lithograph’s arrangement of sharp-edged white and black shapes, which seem cut and pieced together to make rough circles. During a visit to Mexico, Marca-Relli had found that with collaged swatches of canvas, he could define the contours of sun-bathed adobe architecture, though the color was nearly white on white. Back in New York, his minimalist use of color and abstract forms placed him at the center of the emerging Abstract Expressionist movement.
