Label Text: Born in Chicago and trained at the Art Students League in New York City, Granville lived most of his life on the East Coast. While his etchings cover a wide variety of topics, they usually show his wit and playful humor. The Broken Fence recalls and earlier age railway locomotion. A steam engine, with an old-fashioned “cowcatcher” on the front, has come to a stop because three cows have wandered onto the tracks. The engineer runs towards them, waving frantically. Two of the cows watch him with interest, while the third ignores him completely, not at all disturbed at holding up the long passenger train.
